How you care for your lips in the first few days affects how comfortable you are and how soon your result settles. Here is the aftercare we walk through with clients at Honey Rae Aesthetics, serving Eagle Mountain, Saratoga Springs, and Lehi. Your printed aftercare sheet comes first. If anything here differs from your sheet, follow the sheet and ask us.
How long does lip filler swelling last?
Lip filler swelling usually peaks in the first 24 to 48 hours and then improves steadily. Most of it is gone within about a week, and the lips have usually settled by about two weeks. Swelling is often uneven at first. One side or the upper lip can look fuller for a few days. That early unevenness is common, which is why we judge the result at a follow-up instead of on day one.
What should you do right after lip filler?
In the first few hours, the goal is to keep swelling and pressure down:
- Use a cold compress wrapped in a clean cloth, on and off for 10 to 15 minutes at a time. Never put ice directly on the skin.
- Keep your hands off. Don't press, squeeze, or massage your lips unless your injector specifically tells you to.
- Skip lip makeup on the injection points for the rest of the day so the tiny entry points stay clean.
- Drink water normally. Some clients avoid straws on day one because of the pressure. Ask what your injector prefers.
What should you avoid for the first 24 to 48 hours?
For the first day or two, avoid anything that increases blood flow, heat, or pressure in your lips:
- Strenuous exercise. Wait about 24 to 48 hours before hard workouts. A gentle walk is fine.
- Alcohol. It can worsen swelling and bruising, so most people wait at least 24 hours.
- Heat. Skip saunas, hot tubs, and long hot showers for a few days.
- Pressure on the lips. Go easy on kissing and sleeping face-down the first night. Sleeping on your back with your head slightly raised helps.
- Dental work. Ask before booking a dental cleaning or procedure in the two weeks around your appointment.
Don't stop any prescribed medicine to reduce bruising unless the prescriber who manages it tells you to.
Is bruising normal after lip filler?
Yes, bruising is common after lip filler and usually fades within a week or two. Cold compresses early on help. If you have an event, book your filler at least two weeks ahead so any bruising and swelling have time to resolve. A small bump you can feel, but not see, is also common at first and often softens as swelling settles. Tell us if it doesn't.
What if you get cold sores?
If you've ever had cold sores, tell your injector before treatment. Lip injections can trigger an outbreak in people who carry the virus. Your provider may discuss whether preventive medicine makes sense for you. If a cold sore starts after treatment, contact us rather than treating it on your own.
Which warning signs need a call right away?
Most aftercare is about comfort, but a few signs are urgent. A rare but serious filler complication is product blocking or pressing on a blood vessel. Call us immediately at (801) 210-9268 if you notice:
- pain that is severe, increasing, or out of proportion to normal tenderness;
- skin that turns white, gray, dusky blue, or blotchy purple, especially in a pattern spreading from the treated area;
- skin that feels noticeably cool or looks mottled;
- blisters or scabbing developing in the days after treatment;
- signs of infection, such as increasing redness, heat, pus, or fever.
Any change in your vision, eye pain, weakness, or trouble speaking after filler is an emergency. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. The FDA lists injection into a blood vessel as a serious dermal filler risk. Fast assessment is what matters. Don't wait to see whether it improves, and don't rely on an article to decide whether it's normal.
When can you see the final result?
The result has usually settled at about two weeks, once swelling has resolved and the filler has integrated. That's when we like to see you for a follow-up, and it's the right time to judge shape and symmetry. Lips naturally aren't perfectly symmetrical, so the goal is balance, not a mirror image.
When should you get a lip filler touch-up?
You should consider a touch-up only after your lips have fully settled, usually at least two weeks after treatment, and only after a reassessment. A touch-up is a decision about what you see at that point, not a fixed schedule. More filler isn't always the answer. Sometimes the right step is waiting, adjusting placement, or choosing a lip flip for upper-lip show instead of more volume. Our lip filler vs. lip flip comparison explains the difference.
When you come in for a touch-up or a repeat treatment, tell us:
- the product and amount used before, and where it was done;
- what has changed since then, such as volume, shape, or a lump you can feel;
- what you'd like to keep and what you'd like to change.
How long does lip filler last?
Hyaluronic acid lip fillers commonly last somewhere from several months to about a year. The range depends on the product, the amount, and how your body breaks it down. Lips move constantly, so filler there often fades sooner than in less mobile areas. Hyaluronic acid filler can also be dissolved with an enzyme (hyaluronidase) when there's a clinical reason. That's one reason providers often choose it for lips.
